Coal Kids Costume Contest

Calling all little miners, coal queens, future equipment operators, and coal country kids! Join us during the 32nd Annual WV Coal Festival for a fun, family-friendly costume contest celebrating Appalachian pride and the next generation of coal country.

Official Event Details

Come Dressed. Come Proud.

Kids are encouraged to dress in their best coal-themed, miner-inspired, Appalachian, or West Virginia heritage costume for a chance to win fun awards, trophies, and coal country bragging rights.

Contest Rules

Before You Register

All costumes must be family-friendly.
Costumes should relate to coal mining, Appalachian heritage, West Virginia culture, or coal country themes.
No weapons or inappropriate props permitted.
Parents/guardians are responsible for children at all times.
Participants must check in no later than 4:30 PM.

A completed registration form is required.
A $10 donation must be submitted at check-in.
Judges’ decisions are final.
By participating, parents/guardians agree to allow photos/videos to be used for festival marketing purposes.

Entry Details

What to Enter

Entry is free.
Dessert must be coal-themed in appearance, name, decoration, or concept.
Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and other dessert entries are welcome.
Homemade or bakery-prepared items are permitted, but contestant must be the creator or decorator.
Entries must be completed and ready for judging upon arrival.

Official Rules

Before You Enter

Open to all ages.
Youth contestants may enter with parent/guardian assistance.
One entry per person or team.
All entries must be delivered between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM.
Late entries may not be accepted.

Entries become display items until judging is complete.
Festival reserves the right to photograph entries for promotional use.
Contestants are responsible for serving utensils or display stands if needed.
After awards, desserts may be included in the Cake Walk fundraiser unless contestant requests otherwise.

How the Cake Walk Works

After the Dessert Throwdown awards are presented, the fun continues with a Cake Walk Fundraiser inside the Coal Heritage Museum. Walk the circle while music plays, stop when the music stops, and you could win a dessert!

2Participants walk while music plays.

3When the music stops, everyone stops on a number.

4A winning number is drawn and that person wins a dessert.
